How to Paint Metal: A Simple Guide to Refreshing Your Home

06 / 09 / 26

A tired radiator, a weather-worn garden chair, a forgotten metal accessory waiting in the shed – these are the kinds of details others tend to overlook, and this is where a little creativity goes a long way. Painting metal is one of the simplest ways to breathe new life into a piece you already own, and with the right preparation and a carefully chosen colour, the results can feel beautifully considered and built to last.

We believe that every detail in your home deserves a creative touch. A freshly painted metal finish does more than transform how a piece looks; it also helps protect it against rust, weathering and the wear of everyday life. Here’s how to do it well.

Choosing the Right Paint for Metal

Getting the paint right is where a lasting finish begins. Metal is a particular surface to work with, so it pays to choose a specialist metal paint – one formulated to grip properly and help guard against the peeling, flaking and corrosion that can otherwise creep in over time.

Our metal paints are water-based, which makes them a more practical and pleasant choice for everyday projects around the home: lower in odour, easier to work with, and kinder to clean up after.

1. Gather Your Tools

A little preparation makes all the difference, so gather everything you need before you begin:

  • Wire brush or sandpaper
  • Damp cloth
  • Specialist metal paint
  • Paint brush
  • Diluted detergent
  • Dust sheet or newspaper

2. Prepare the Surface Properly

Preparation is the step that quietly determines everything that follows, so it’s worth taking your time here. Start by removing any loose paint, rust or flaking with a wire brush or sandpaper, working until the surface feels smooth to the touch.

Next, clean it thoroughly with diluted detergent and rinse with clean water. Finish by wiping over with a damp cloth, then let the surface dry completely before you reach for the paint – a clean, dry base is the secret to a finish that lasts.

3. Apply the Paint Evenly

Lay down a dust sheet or newspaper to protect the surrounding area, then give your paint a thorough stir; it’s the easiest way to keep the colour even from the first stroke to the last.

Using a suitable brush, apply a thin, even coat directly onto the metal. Resist the urge to overload the brush – thin coats are your friend here. Allow each one to dry fully before adding the next; in most cases, two coats will give you the best coverage and the most durable finish.

4. Add the Finishing Touches

Once everything is dry, take a moment to look over your work in good light – it’s often the smallest details that make all the difference. Any missed spots or uneven patches can be tidied up easily with a finer brush.

For pieces that live outdoors or take daily knocks, a protective top coat is a worthwhile final step, helping the finish stand up to weathering, scratches and general wear.

Caring for Painted Metal Surfaces

What’s really great about our interior and exterior eggshell paint is the quality and how little it asks of you afterwards. A regular dust with a soft cloth or gentle brush is usually all it takes to keep the finish looking clean and considered.

Try to steer clear of abrasive materials and harsh cleaning products, which can wear at the paint over time. With that gentle bit of care, your refreshed metal surfaces will keep looking beautifully finished for years to come.
