With so much choice, you might think your room already looks completely unique to you. The wallpaper you chose looks fantastic, but what would it look like hung horizontally?

It may sound a little off the wall, but this simple interior design trick makes a pattern look totally different. With a little helping hand from Graham & Brown, you’ll be able to totally transform your home with a look that guests are sure to notice. While vertical designs make a room feel taller, horizontal patterns can create the illusion of lower ceilings, which is ideal if you’re planning to make a more intimate, cosy environment.

It’s time to turn your interior design on its head (or at least to a 90-degree angle)! A classic stripe or bold motif would look amazing hung horizontally, so why not follow our simple guide?

How to Hang Wallpaper Horizontally

Tips for hanging wallpaper horizontally

Putting up wallpaper horizontally is easy. First, you’re going to need a spirit level to create a plum line. This will help you guide your wallpaper along the wall really quickly.

Method:

1

Measure your wall and add an extra inch to overlap the corner. When using your measuring tape, make sure it follows your plumb line and doesn’t dip in the middle as this may add extra unnecessary length.

2

Start hanging your wallpaper from the corner and carefully smooth it into place. A good tip is to prop the wallpaper up on a chair as you move along.

3

Smooth the wallpaper against your plumb line. Be aware that your skirting board and ceiling may not be straight. Don’t be tempted to use your skirting board as an accurate guide - use your plumb line at all times!

4

Once you reach the top or bottom (depending on which one you started from) you’ll need to cut the same sized paper strip and shave it down with a craft knife.

5

Wipe away any excess glue with a damp sponge.

Voila! You’re all done. We told you it was easy.
