How to Decorate a Child’s Bedroom: Trends and Ideas

A child’s bedroom has a lot to do. It’s a place to play and imagine, somewhere to do homework as they get older, and ~ perhaps most importantly ~ somewhere to wind down and sleep. Decorating one is really an exercise in balance: creating a space that feels fun and full of personality, while staying calm enough for a good night’s rest.

The good news is that a few considered choices make that balance far easier to strike. Here’s our guide to decorating a child’s room, from the trends worth knowing ~ and the wallpapers and paints that bring them to life ~ to the practical touches we’d recommend.
A handful of ideas come up again and again in the children’s rooms we love. Here are four of our favorites, along with the designs and colors we’d reach for to create them.

Rooms that grow with them

Children’s tastes change quickly, so a room designed to grow with them will always serve you better than one built around this year’s favorite character. The trick is to choose a base that’s timeless.

A design like Quartet Stripe Sage is a lovely example. The wide, tonal sage stripes bring a gentle sense of rhythm and calm ~ soft enough to soothe, characterful enough to feel considered ~ and because it isn’t tied to any particular age, it’ll carry a room from the early years onwards. For an older child or teenager, Heritage Plaid Blue does the same job with a little more attitude: a contemporary twist on a classic tartan, combining fresh blues with deep navy on a large-scale check, its matte, almost woollen finish adding a cozy, grown-up warmth. Add cushions, art and accessories to keep either scheme feeling current, and you have a room that evolves with its owner ~ the more sustainable, and more practical, way to decorate.

Bringing nature indoors

Nature-led rooms continue to be a favorite, and it’s easy to see why. Botanical prints and leafy greens create a space that feels both calming and quietly imaginative ~ the same biophilic thinking that works so well elsewhere in the home, scaled for younger minds.

Daisyfield Crème Brûlée is a charming way in: cheerful daisies scattered across a warm, custard-cream ground for a fresh, happy floral that feels calm rather than busy. This wallpaper pairs perfectly with our Crème Brûlée paint on the surrounding walls ~ for a soft, sunny scheme that wraps a room in gentle warmth. Our children’s wallpaper collection has plenty to explore, from gentle botanicals to characterful animals.

A statement wall mural

For real impact, nothing captures a child’s imagination like a bespoke wall mural. Where wallpaper repeats a pattern, a bespoke mural turns a single wall into a whole scene, printed to your wall’s exact measurements.

The Glasshouse Sage mural is a wonderful choice for a young explorer: three majestic birds sit proud against a soft, tropical sage backdrop, with playful pops of pink and yellow emerging through the greenery below. It brings nature and wonder into a room in equal measure. Our range of children’s bespoke wall murals makes it easy to reflect whatever your child loves, from a hot air balloon race to a starry night sky.

Playful color and painted features

Not every idea needs to fill a room. A feature wall, a painted arch behind the bed, a band of color halfway up the wall, or a scattering of stars or spots all bring personality without overwhelming a space ~ and they’re lovely, low-commitment ways to introduce a brighter color.

Color is where a child’s room really comes to life, and a considered trio covers every mood. Lioness, a modern-day mustard, is full of energy ~ ideal for a playful accent or a sunny play corner. Sephal, a blue-leaning teal with a hint of green, brings a calming, grounding focal point that suits a sleep space beautifully. And Vampire, a bold, warm shade with soft orange undertones, adds cocooning depth for an older child who wants something a little more grown-up. A nice approach is to zone with colour, using our kids’ room paint to keep livelier tones where they play and calmer ones where they rest.

A calmer, sensory-led approach

Running through all of this is a growing, and very welcome, move towards decorating children’s rooms with wellbeing in mind ~ creating spaces that soothe as much as they stimulate. It’s an approach close to our own: our Sensory Home® collection was built around exactly this idea, using soft, grounding tones designed to bring a gentle sense of calm. For a child who finds busy, high-contrast spaces overwhelming, a quieter, more considered palette can make a room feel like a proper retreat.

The practical touches parents love & Bringing it all together

A child’s room takes its fair share of knocks, so a hard-wearing, washable finish is ideal. Our Resistance Durable Matte Emulsion is scrubbable and wipe-clean ~ reassuring when it comes to sticky fingers, stray felt-tips and the general adventures of childhood. All of our paints are water-based and low in odour, making them a perfect choice for a room where your child sleeps.
Decorating a child’s bedroom is one of the more joyful jobs in a home ~ a rare chance to be playful, imaginative and a little bit bold. Keep the balance between fun and calm in mind, choose a base you can grow with, and let your child’s personality lead the way. The result will be a room that’s inspiring by day, restful by night, and unmistakably theirs.
