The great thing about Graham & Brown is that we’re a creative bunch, and people always want to know what “goes into” a roll of wallpaper. It’s easy to show face to face, but our challenge has always to get across all that passion, artistry and talent that goes into every single roll. I mean, we make over 20million rolls of wallpaper a year, and every single one starts with a blank sheet of paper.
So – cue an idea for a small short film. “Design Artisans”
with the brief of getting across a flavour of what goes into a wallpaper or canvas that could be hanging in your home right now. In 60 seconds, well ok, like all good stories it got longer in the telling, another 90 seconds longer – but I’m sure if you’ve seen the full film
, you’ll agree, isn’t too painful. To be honest that’s just the design part, not the proofing, or production – so plenty of scope for a sequel or two.
But this is what went on back stage;
Shot in just one day – it was a long one – on a phantom camera, if I was techy I could tell you how many frames a second it shoots – but basically it means you can sloooooow things down to super-slo-mo pace. This means the unfurling of silk takes on a beautifully choreographed aura that is just stunning to look at. Of course without a fabulous in house talent of Vicky
none of it would be possible – you should take 30 seconds to listen to their passion for pattern – I find it quite humbling.
Then there’s the music to the original film – that’s a whole other (epic) story – it’s Black Submarine if you’re wondering, and yes the members were in The Verve and Goldfrapp – we’re obviously well connected – but more of that another day.
